Itinerary
Day 1: YangonUpon arrival at the airport, your guide picks you up by private air-conditioned vehicle and transfers you to your hotel. Relax and refresh in your deluxe room before your evening tour begins. Head out after sunset on a private tour of Yangon highlights, including an initial visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, illuminated in the quiet evening hours. Observe locals and monks offering their devotions, and take in the mystical atmosphere as you gaze in wonder at the 325-foot (99-meter) gilded pagoda and stupa, which you’ll return to the following day. In town, spot many Yangon locals stopping to shop or catch up with friends at a teashop on their way home from work. Join them for snacks and a beverage — draft beer, tea or fresh juice — and walk with your guide to the night market. Enjoy a tasty bowl of noodles here before retiring to your hotel. Overnight: 3-star Clover Hotel in Yangon Day 2: Yangon (B, L)After a hotel breakfast, set out on a private half-day walking tour of Shwedagon Pagoda to see what lies behind its golden façade. En route, you’ll enjoy a second, traditional Burmese breakfast: a bowl of mohinga, a traditional fish soup that locals typically eat for their morning meal. From the bottom of the hill, stroll past hidden walkways that are unknown to most visitors and observe the daily life of the residents living within the pagoda’s immediate surroundings. Inside the eastern entrance to the pagoda, browse a local market and then climb a long, stair-filled corridor up to the pagoda platform, accompanied by your guide. Continue through the back door of Shwedagon Pagoda and discover its enthralling history as your guide shares insight into the Buddhist religion mixed with the Burmese belief in nats, or spirits. You’ll have the opportunity to provide offerings to the monks and even visit a local fortune-teller! In the daylight, admire the magnificent golden dome, which was once covered with tons of pure gold along with numerous precious stones such as jade, rubies, sapphires and diamonds. Your half-day tour ends at Aung Thu Kha restaurant for a Burmese lunch. The rest of the day is yours to explore Yangon at your leisure. Overnight: 3-star Clover Hotel in Yangon Day 3: Yangon (B)After breakfast at the hotel, embark on an architectural heritage walk with your guide. Downtown Yangon stands out for its resplendent colonial-era architecture. Here, you’ll find one of Asia’s most impressive collections of late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, both religious and secular. Follow your guide at a relaxed pace through Yangon’s back streets as you hear about the history of each structure — some vacant and some being restored to the full beauty of their original construction. Due to the protection of the Yangon Heritage Trust, many of these buildings have survived after decades of decay. Complete your step back in time with a complimentary drink at the Union Bar and Grill, located in the old Red Cross building on Strand Road. Afterward, your guide drives you by private vehicle to the airport for your return flight home.
