As this is a private tour, the precise starting time is up to you: 9:30am is a good time since Shanghai's rush hour is finished but there is plenty of time to see the sights. Your guide will meet you at your hotel or other central meeting point and accompany you around the city, either on public transport or in an air-conditioned private vehicle depending on which option you choose.
You'll start the day at People's Park, a classic spot to watch Chinese life unfold. If it's the weekend, see the famous marriage-matching market, where parents and grandparents come to pair off their unwed children. During the week, you might see citizens exercising, square-dancing, or even singing opera.
Next, you'll head to the Flower and Bird's market, where you'll experience the real local's life style, and lots of different flowers, birds and many other exotic animals. Feel free to sample the delights being offered in this unique and historical part of the modern city.
From here, it's 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) by public transport (or private car if you choose this option) to your next stop, the Jade Buddha Temple. Built in 1882, it's famous for its glorious translucent jade Buddha. Your guide will explain the role of Buddhism in Chinese culture as you explore this fascinating place.
After the temple, break for an authentic Chinese lunch of Shanghai cuisine at a traditional restaurant, washed down with cups hot water. You'll love the dumplings.
Next up is the leafy Confucius Temple in Shanghai's Old Town, about 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) away. Confucius is China's most famous philosopher, whose work still has an impact not only on Chinese culture but around the world, and Confucianism is one of China's most important belief systems.
Then, you will go to visit the the Bund area or Riverside Promenade (Binjiang Da Dao) to see the amazing city skyline. If you like, you can have a cup of coffee while enjoy the authentic river view.
From here, it's a short walk to pedestrianized Nanjing Lu, perhaps China's most famous shopping street. It's home to a wide range of of shops, restaurants, malls, and snack stores: it's a great place for people-watching and to discover both Chinese brands and Chinese takes on Western brands.
Your guide will escort you to a viewing point to capture classic vistas before accompanying you back to your hotel, or escorting you to another central Shanghai destination of your choice.
NOTE: This tour comes in two options that you can choose from when you book this tour. One option is the tour only where you'll experience Shanghai's metro and taxis, the other option includes a private car and driver.
