Itinerary
Day 1: Sedona – Grand Canyon (L) Your 2-day tour begins in Sedona with hotel pickup by comfortable coach in the morning. Set off on one of the most scenic drives in the country, tracing the red rock buttes of Sedona to Oak Creek Canyon, where you can capture limitless postcard views. Journey through Coconino National Forest, the largest ponderosa pine forest on the continent, and see the dormant volcanoes of the San Francisco Peaks. Stop for a stroll among the sleeping volcanoes and lava fields, and visit the last volcano to erupt in Arizona (back in 1064) at Sunset Crater National Monument. Learn about how the geology was used by the Apollo Mission in the 1960s to train astronauts and practice Rover missions, and then delve into the history of this region at Wupatki National Monument, a site of well-preserved ruins of the Sinagua American Indians. Hear about the unique survival tactics required to live in this harsh landscape as you check out the Ballcourt and the Kiva (ceremonial gathering point for the tribe). Head onward to the Navajo Nation Reservation, where you have some time to browse the great selection of arts and souvenirs. Lunch is included at the festive, Southwest-style Cameron Trading Post. Finally, make the last stretch of the drive to Grand Canyon National Park, where you'll cruise along the South Rim for stops at picturesque viewpoints. Head to Grand Canyon Village to enjoy more views or take a nature walk before checking into your basic yet comfortable accommodations in the mid- to late-afternoon. You then have free time to explore Grand Canyon on your own; take advantage of the park's free shuttle, and enjoy dinner at your leisure at one of the restaurants near your accommodation. If you want to take a helicopter ride into the canyon tomorrow, let your guide know before you're left on your own for the evening.
Overnight: Maswik Lodge in Grand Canyon National Park
Day 2: Grand Canyon – Sedona Your morning is free to enjoy the park at your leisure. If you've opted for the helicopter tour, you can look forward to amazing aerial views of steep canyon walls and the Colorado River. Or spend your free time admiring the canyon's amazing rock formations using the park shuttle or by embarking on one of many nearby hiking trails such as the Bright Angel Trail.
In the afternoon, head back to Sedona. The drive is about 2.5 hours, and you'll stop to purchase snacks along the way.
