Overview
Reykjavik – Nesjavellir (May-October) The tour will start from Reykjavik by heading to the Nesjavellir geothermal area, one of the hottest spots in Iceland, located nearby the Hengill volcano. At Nesjavellir you will find the second largest geothermal power station in Iceland, which serves Reykjavik region with warming water. Thingvellir National Park From Nesjavellir, we head to the Thingvellir National park and drive by the side of Thingvallavatn lake which offers spectacular views of the landscape. The Thingvellir National park served as parliament ground during many centuries, from the time of early settler Vikings and up to 19th century. In the valley at Thingvellir, you will walk along the Almanagja fissure, the place where American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge and move apart. Geysir and Strokkur Then drive to Haukadalur, the valley of geysers and making a short stop on our way at the Lugarvatn lake, known by its hot springs underwater nearby the shore. Next stop will be at the Haukadalur valley, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes into the air a mixture of hot water and steam to a height up to 30 meters (98 feet), while other hot springs at the area are quiet but colorful. Gullfoss Waterfall One of the main attractions on the route will be the Gullfoss waterfall with cascades of 11 and 22 meters (36 to 72 feet) of powerful water stream falling into the gorge. From Gullfoss, we go toward to the Friðheimar greenhouse and make a stop on a way at the Faxi waterfall on Tungufljot river. Faxi Waterfall Faxi Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall very close but not visible from the main road. Just above the waterfall is a common sheepfold and right next to the waterfall you can find some cool salmon ladder. From the parking place you are able to walk all the way down and very close to the waterfall if you want to take a closer look or photograph it. Friðheimar Greenhouse The Friðheimar greenhouse is a good example of horticulture in Iceland, it is open for visitors, and you can come and enjoy a unique food experience at the restaurant, with tomatoes growing all around. Kerid Crater One more stop that we do on the way back to Reykjavik at the Kerid crater, 55 meters (180 feet) deep explosion crater filled with water, creating a lake whose steep circular slopes resemble an ancient amphitheater. On the way to Reykjavik, we go over the Hellisheidi mountain pass and bring you back to Reykjavik to your hotel or guesthouse. Return to Reykjavik Please note: The itinerary could be altered according to weather and road conditions.
