Start with a pickup from your Porto hotel in the morning, and head out on your full-day tour to the historical Minho province, known as vinho verde. The area produces Portugal's characteristic green wine, and is home to more than 30,000 artisan wine growers who stay true to the country's distinctive winemaking traditions. Aboard an 8-person minivan, travel to a beautifully secluded destination marked by lush emerald hillsides and sloped vineyards that are kissed by the Atlantic sea breeze. Arrive in the ancient city of Celorico de Basto roughly an hour later, and head to a local wine estate that offers views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Enjoy an informative tasting session to try the region’s unique green wine — named for its youthful freshness, rather than its color. Hear how the area's granite soils, intense rainfall, high humidity and acidic grapes create the wine's light, aromatic flavor and light-green, yellowish hue. Next, head to a local restaurant for lunch. Dine on regional cuisine, including a rich and hearty Portuguese stew and fresh cod, and enjoy the relaxing setting with impressive views over the city of Amarante. After lunch, explore Amarante's historical city center. Nestled among rich agricultural lands, Amarante is believed to have existed since the 4th century BC. Visit Church St Goncalo, named after an important Portuguese priest, before heading to a restored manor house for your next wine tasting. Soak up the rustic atmosphere of this traditional working farm as you sip local wine in the tasting room alongside samples of local sausage. Return to your Porto hotel in the evening.
