This 4-night tour introduces you to the 'Wild West' of Sicily -- much different from the eastern part of the island. You’ll stay overnight in a first-class hotel in Palermo and wake up to a buffet breakfast each morning (most lunches and dinners are included, too). Your days are spent on guided excursions to various cities and areas around western Sicily. Some attractions are optional, so not all entrance fees are included. See below for a full itinerary.
Day 1: Palermo (D)When you arrive in Palermo, make your way to your designated hotel to meet your guide and tour group. Your guide will go over your itinerary during an orientation presentation, followed by dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Hotel Excelsior in Palermo Day 2: Palermo – Corleone – Ficuzza – Palermo (B,L,D)From Palermo, travel inland to the area of Corleone. You may have heard of this place in pop culture references like The Godfather; it’s known as the birthplace of the Sicilian Mafia. Start your time in Corleone with a cooking class to learn the art of traditional Sicilian cuisine. Under the guidance of a cooking instructor, prepare some authentic Sicilian dishes such as pasta alla norma (pasta with aubergines and tomato sauce) and cannoli di ricotta, a traditional Sicilian sweet. At the end, sit down to enjoy your freshly prepared meal. After lunch, you’ll delve into the history of the Mafia, one of the most legendary aspects of Sicilian history and heritage. A local of Corleone will provide a fascinating presentation on the topic of the Sicilian Mafia, explaining its origins and discussing how Corleone inhabitants have worked to eliminate organized crime today. At the end of the day, travel back to Palermo, where you’ll bid arrivederci to your travel companions during a festive farewell dinner at your hotel. Overnight: Same hotel in Palermo
Day 3: Palermo – Monreale – Cefalù (optional) – Palermo (B, D)Take a morning tour of Palermo with your guide. A city full of character, Palermo is home to many interesting monuments including Quattro Canti, a splendid example of Spanish Baroque architecture. Admire the 12th-century architecture of Palermo Cathedral, whose fine mosaics represent a complete cycle of the Old Testament and New Testament, and stop by the Palazzo dei Normanni, the Royal Palace of Palermo. Next, head to the town of Monreale overlooking the valley of La Conca d’Oro. Here, visit the notable Monreale Cathedral and its vast architectural complex including the Benedictine Abbey, the Archbishop Palace and the Royal Palace (entrances at own expense). Your Monreale tour is followed by free time or an optional tour to the picturesque fishing village of Cefalù, where you’ll visit the Norman Cathedral and stroll through the narrow lanes of the historic center with its shops and restaurant. In the evening, enjoy a festive dinner with your group at a fashionable local restaurant in Palermo. Overnight: Same hotel in Palermo
Day 4: Palermo – Segesta – Marsala – Palermo (B,L)Hop in the vehicle and begin your journey to Segesta, one of the best-preserved and most beautiful of all the Greek archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. The star of Segesta is its magnificent Doric temple, the Temple of Segesta, dating from around 420 BC. It ranks as one of the best-preserved Greek architectural sites in Europe. Entering this amazing archaeological treasure is optional and at your own expense, but it’s well worth it. After spending some time in Segesta, continue to the sea town of Marsala, known for its sweet wines. Visit a wine cellar to sample some of Marsala’s local wines during a taste session. Drive along Trapani’s coastline and stop at a local restaurant for a Sicilian lunch. Arriving back in Palermo, the rest of the evening is yours to spend as you please, and your guide can suggest some restaurants that offer traditional local cuisine for dinner on your own. Overnight: Same hotel in Palermo Day 5: Palermo (B)After a leisurely buffet breakfast, your western Sicily experience ends with hotel check-out.
