Overview
The main coffee grown in Kenya is Arabica that is rich in acidity and full bodied, however taste varies per region where it is grown. The regions are from Nairobi right to the foothills of Mount Kenya. The coffee is grown in high altitudes (1,400 - 2,100 meters above sea level) in the central highlands with sloping sides from rich deep volcanic soils. Program: Day 1: Depart Nairobi to Nyeri and visit the local farmer then head to a testing center and Nyeri Conservancy. Later proceed to your hotel for dinner and overnight. Day 2: Depart for Tea Farm and Plantation with testing center as well . Later proceed to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Day 3: After breakfast, pass via one more farm time permitting and proceed to Nairobi arriving in the evening. Please note mills are closed on Sundays and Public holidays. You may want to purchase some tea or coffee therefore kindly carry some Kenya Shillings with you.
Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi County to Nyeri County - 3 hour drive 08.00: Depart Nairobi city heading north to the Central highlands into Nyeri county. Arrive for lunch and check in at the hotel. 14.00: Depart to the higher altitude to visit farmers in their fields of coffee and if time allows you may visit one major coffee producer. Then return later to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Stay at either: Green Hills Hotel or Outspan hotel or Sangare Farm House (green energy-friendly facility). Day 2: Nyeri County - Full day 07.30: Have breakfast at the hotel. 08.30: Leave hotel to the coffee factory to see the pulping and value chain. Later on move to tea plantations to visit the farmers and experience tea picking. Lunch will be served in one of the farms as it will be picnic lunch. In the afternoon see part of the value chain in tea processing. then leave for the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Stay at Stay at either: Green Hills Hotel or Outspan hotel or Sangare Farm House (green energy-friendly facility). Day 3: Nyeri county - Othaya - Nairobi county 07.30: Have breakfast at the hotel. 08.00: Depart for Othaya Tea Factory to see the pulping, milling and grading of tea. Lunch will be served en-route back to Nairobi. You will arrive in the evening at around 19.00.
