Leave Munich in the early morning and travel by coach to Hohenschwangau, a scenic Alpine area that’s home to two world-famous Bavarian castles: Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.

As you travel, listen to your guide explain the day’s itinerary in more detail, then watch a video that gives you the background of Neuschwanstein’s eccentric creator, Ludwig II. Ludwig II was the mastermind behind a serious of extravagant and majestic fairytale castles that dot the Bavarian landscape. These passion projects left him in debt and he was later dethroned after being declared unfit to rule. Hear more about Ludwig II and about his mysterious death, which happened just days after being deposed.

Upon arrival in Hohenschwangau, you have the choice to either take part in an optional bike tour or to explore independently. If you choose to cycle, cruise along Hohenschwangau's bike paths, through lush meadows and forests. Stop for a refreshing swim in a crisp, clear Alpine lake. If you choose to explore independently, hike or take a cable car up Mt Tegelberg, or pay a visit to Hohenschwangau Castle, a dramatic Gothic fortress that was the childhood home of Ludwig II.

Enjoy time at your leisure to eat lunch (own expense) before regrouping with the rest of the tourgoers at the entrance to Neuschwanstein Castle. If you’ve taken the bike tour, you’ll hike up the hill as a group and meet the others at the entrance. Alternatively, you can take a horse and carriage or a bus part of the way up (own expense). Pause at St Mary’s bridge for photos against the backdrop of the surrounding hills and castle.

Take a guided tour through the interior and look out for the murals on the walls, which depict scenes and legends from Wagner’s operas. The castle also features an artificial grotto and a frescoed throne room.

In late afternoon, board the coach for the return journey to Munich, where your tour concludes.
