Great overview and orientation of the city
Your shore excursion begins with pickup from the cruise port in Mumbai. Aboard an air-conditioned private vehicle, your guide takes you to the Gateway of India, a colossal structure constructed in 1924. The gateway overlooks Mumbai Harbour, which is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the Colaba district.
The first stop is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), a UNESCO World Heritage site formerly known as Victoria Terminus. The historic railway station serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. Next, make your way to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai (formerly Crawford Market). The popular wholesale market is a preferred location to purchase festive decorations, dried fruits, fresh produce, and more.
Moving onward you'll discover Marine Drive, built on reclaimed land in 1920. It arcs along the shore of the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point past Girgaum Chowpatty and continues to the foot of Malabar Hill. Its twinkling nighttime lights earned it the nickname Queen’s Necklace.
Around noon, visit the Hanging Gardens (Ferozeshah Mehta), located at Malabar Hill. Admire panoramic views of South Mumbai, then delight in a visit to Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum. It is here that Gandhi laid the foundation for many independence movements. The three-story building now honors the man who put the interests of the nation above all.
A 1-hour stop is made at one of the best local restaurants in the area (own expense). After lunch, you're taken to Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat to see the 140-year-old unmechanized laundry facility, which houses more than 1,000 open-air troughs for beating the dirt out of thousands of pounds of soiled clothes and linens.
Then you will take a drive past Mumbai University, the colonial buildings of the Mumbai High Court, and Haji Ali Dargah — the tomb of the Muslim saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. This Indo-Islamic shrine located on an offshore inlet is a striking sight floating like a sacred mirage off the coast.
Your last stop is the Prince of Wales Museum (closed on Monday), which has a mix of exhibits from across India on display. The full-day tour concludes with drop-off at the port or your desired location in Mumbai.
