Overview
After pick up from your Melbourne city hotel or Federation Square, travel through the vast volcanic plains on route to Geelong where you have time to stroll along the beautifully transformed waterfront. The first stop along the coast is at Bells Beach, a famous surfing beach. The focus then turns to Australian native wildlife as you have the opportunity to observe Eastern Grey Kangaroos in the wild. You'll then begin traveling the very scenic, cliff-hugging section of the Great Ocean Road. While winding along, stop to view the ‘Arch’ while your guide shares the story of this memorial road. After lunch in Lorne, you'll stop at many scenic spots including Kennett River where you can see koalas and many colorful native birds in the wild. Take a 1-kilometer guided walk through a cool temperate rainforest gully to see the world’s tallest flowering plants and prehistoric plants. Your private self contained villa at Beacon Point Ocean View Villas is set high on a hill overlooking the Southern Ocean. A great place to relax and unwind. Dinner tonight is at the iconic Chris's Restaurant. Day 2 starts with breakfast at Bay Leaf Cafe before a scenic drive through the Otway Ranges and onto the ‘Shipwreck Coast’. The first stop is at Castle Cove overlooking the Aire River valley. The 12 Apostles are Icons of Australia’s natural beauty. You'll arrive as the stacks are lit with the morning sun making them perfect for photos and crowd free. After hearing of the creation of the stacks and holding some of the limestone rock you can explore the boardwalks or brave a helicopter flight along the coastline (own expense). You'll then visit ‘Loch Ard Gorge’, the site of the most famous 19th century Australian shipwreck. While hearing the tale you will be able to see and hold some original artifacts from the ‘Loch Ard’. Port Campbell is the lunch stop for today. After lunch, visit London Bridge, Bay of Islands and Bay of Martyrs. The journey then continues through Warrnambool and onto Tower Hill Game Reserve where you may have the chance to see koalas, kangaroos and emus. Continue through picturesque Port Fairy towards Mount Gambier, home of the ‘Blue’ crater lake. Check into your accommodation at ‘The Commodore’ in Mount Gambier where dinner and breakfast are included. Day 3 starts with a drive through the Coonawarra wine region and a visit to the World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves National Park for a cave tour with a local guide. Continue through another South Australian wine region of Padthaway to Keith for lunch.
