Helicopter flight tour (1.5 hours) After hotel pickup in Medellín, head to the nearby local airport, where a helicopter is ready and waiting for you to board (max of 6 passengers per helicopter). Receive a safety briefing and before you know it, the blades blur into action and you’re in the air.
During the 20-minute flight, your pilot takes you all over the city situated in deep Aburrá Valley, a natural basin of the Medellín River in the northern Andes mountains.
Swoop over the city park of Cerro Nutibara, 82 acres (33 hectares) of hilly woods, at the top of which stands Pueblito Paisa, a replica of a traditional Spanish colonial town. Capture views of Cerro Las Palmas, Cerro de las Cruces and downtown Medellín.
After the helicopter ride, you’ll be taken back to your hotel. If you opt for the city tour (see below), your guide and transport will be waiting at the airport to take you to your next destination.
Optional city tour (3 hours with helicopter flight) Back on land, it’s time discover the metropolis from the ground up. Depending on your group’s preferences, your guide will suggest potential itineraries and provide engaging commentary at each site.
You may want to enter lovely Cerro Nutibara park and travel up its curving road for a closer look at Pueblito Paisa and its central square and fountain, followed by a stop at a lookout for time to snap pics of the 360-degree city view.
Check out the larger-than-life bronze sculptures in Botero Plaza, where you might catch people cavorting about the statues in entertaining photo-ops. Meander over to Plaza Bolívar and admire the Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest in South America, or wind through Zona Rosa, the nightlife district in the upscale neighborhood of Poblado, home of fine wine and dining.
Take a picturesque ride on the Metrocable, a gondola system that takes you on a ride over the valley. You'll learn how the extended public transport system helped foster safety, distancing the city even further from its crime-plagued days during the time of Pablo Escobar, Colombia's most notorious drug lord.
Want to know more about Escobar the man? Your guide can take you to the Monaco Building, where an assassination attempt was made on his family; the house where he was killed by Colombian special forces; or his gravesite on the outskirts of Medellín.
Your 2-hour personalized tour ends with drop-off at your hotel or another location of your choice in Medellín.
