Overview

This farm plans to allocate 1.8 acres for the centerpiece of this project. The area selected will be reforested with native forest. Paths will be constructed throughout the area. The paths will have 21 stations. Each station will highlight a tropical plant fruit and there are also plans to construct a  farm to table restaurant in the center of the reforested area. The restaurant will serve Costa Rican food – all organically grown on local farms.

You will be able to help and participate in many areas of the farm, including the following:

a. Stable – view and ride local horses

b. Poultry area – help collect eggs from the local hens

c. Dairy – watch as cows are fed and milked daily

d. Pig barn – help feed the pigs, or just take a look!

e. Deer – wild deer are often seen in the area

f. Frog pond – see several species of Costa Rican frogs in their native habitat

g. Cherenga (agouti) – the largest of rodents, these animals are often seen on the farm

h. Paca – this animal is seen in the reserve portion of the farm

i. Marmoceta Monkeys – also seen in the reserve portion of the farm

j. Sugar cane fields and animal pasture. Taste the local sugar cane. Learn how sugar cane is harvested

k. Trapiche (sugar mill). Learn how sugar cane was traditionally processed into cane juice, cane sugar, rum and moonshine

l. Fish pond – stocked with local fish

m. Fruit orchard – learn about traditional Costa Rican fruits in the orchard area of the farm

n. Medicinal plants – throughout the farm area traditional medicinal plants grow. Learn to recognize these plants and what they are illnesses they are used to treat

o. Hummingbird garden. Costa Rica is famous for the variety and beauty of its hummingbirds. In this area of the farm plants are cultivated that attract hummingbirds

p. Butterflies – Costa Rica is also known for a wide-variety of butterfly species. As you walk through the farm and reserve areas you will view many different species of butterfly

q. Costa Rican crops – in the farm area you will be able to view the production of a variety of Costa Rican tropical crops (mangos, pineapples, guava, …)

r. Reforestation project – part of the farm is being reforested and returned to a natural state. Learn the history of this project and see the results

s. Burros and Oxen – learn how these animals are used on a traditional Costa Rica farm

This is a 30-day volunteering program, where you are expected to work for at least 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday. All meals and accommodations will be provided during the 30 days.
