3-Day Bolivian Amazon Pampas Adventure from La Paz

Get off the beaten track and experience the Bolivian Amazon. In a short flight, you will be transported from the high-mountain terrain of La Paz to the low-lying heat of the Bolivian Amazon. With an English-speaking guide, this tours combines the best that this region has to offer — from canoe rides, to night tours and fishing trips. Enjoy one night of accommodation in an eco-lodge and another night in a hostel in the Amazonian city of Rurrenabaque. Once in the Amazon, all meals are included. Flights are included in the price. Transfer to La Paz Airport on Day 1 and Rurrenabaque airport pick-up and drop-off is included as well.

Day 1: Flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque and arrival at the Amazon (L/D)
Catch an early flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque. You are responsible for getting to and from the airport in La Paz and from the Rurrenabaque airport to the city center. Your adventure starts in the Rurrenabaque city center.

Travel by car from Rurrenabaque to Santa Rosa. During the trip, look out for heron families, sloths and a lot of flora and fauna in the steaming lowlands of the Bolivian Amazon. At 12pm, lunch is served in Santa Rosa. Then you will board a motorized dugout canoe in Santa Rosa and cruise the Yacuma River. Observe a large variety of reptiles and amphibians, lagartos, turtles, alligators, toads, lizards. Keep your eyes peeled for mammals like the night monkey, red howler, brown capuchin, black spider monkeys, capybaras, storks, kingfishers, falcons, hawks and eagles.

Arrive at the Eco-lodge at dusk. Check in while coffee and herbal teas are served. Take in a superb sunset over the Bolivian Amazon. A buffet dinner is served after the sun goes down. Typical dinners include rice, lentils, pasta, salads, fresh vegetables, and bread. After dinner, discover the Pampas at night on a canoe trip, in search of alligators whose eyes shine at night (bring a flashlight!) and other nocturnal animals.

Day 2: Activities in the Amazon and return to Rurrenabaque (B/L)
At 7am enjoy a buffet breakfast before leaving at 8am for a canoe ride and fishing trip on the Yacuma River. Try your luck at sport fishing; catching carnivorous piranhas among other varieties of Amazon fish (most of which are released back into the river; please note that this activity is seasonal and subject to change). Later search for eagles, toucans and sloths. Observe the lush, tropical vegetation such as orchids, bibosis and more.

Then, head back to the lodge for a buffet lunch before our departure back to Santa Rosa. After a 1.5-hour boat ride along the Yacuma River, a car brings you back to the town of Rurrenabaque, arriving at approximately 5pm (depending on the conditions of the highway). Relax and get a good night's sleep at a hostel in Rurrenabaque.

Day 3 - Flight back from Rurrenabaque to La Paz (B)
Make your own way to the airport and take your flight back to La Paz. The flight times depend on the day, but usually there are 4 flights daily: 7:20am, 12:45pm, 4:20pm and 6:25pm.

Important: flights can be unreliable returning to La Paz, we recommend that you to plan to leave La Paz at least two days after the trip ends in case flights from Rurrenabaque are delayed 24 hours.

Recommendations for what to bring: clothing suitable for humid/tropical weather & for trekking through bushes & traveling by canoe, long sleeved cotton shirts (for sun and mosquitoes), shorts & cotton pants, hiking boots, sneakers (rubber shoes for boat trips), light windbreaker, bathing suit, hat or cap, camera, pocket knife, sun glasses, flashlight with batteries, binoculars, backpack, towel, insect repellent (90-100% DEET), vitamin “B” to repel mosquitoes, copy of vaccination record for yellow fever and tetanus (malaria is not present), Imodium or other over the counter diarrhea medicine. Bring enough cash with you before leaving La Paz since ATMs in Rurrenabaque are not reliable.
