Overview

Lying just north of Pretoria at De Wildt in the picturesque of the Magaliesberg mountains is the Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre. It is clear when visiting the centre that the driving ideals here are not overtly commercial like other wildlife venues in the area but ones of conservation and the promotion of ecologically sound principles and awareness. Despite excellent sponsorship and support it relies very heavily for its existence on you the visitor. You can be reassured that your attendance fees here contribute mostly to the welfare of the centre and the animals.
Although the Cheetah breeding programme was the main initiative that led to the foundation of the centre in 1971 there are many other animals whose continued existence and genetic diversity is supported by various breeding programmes at the centre. There are African Wild Dog, Brown Hyena, Honey Badger, Caracal, Vultures, Ostriches, Impala and Meerkats in various projects.
Spending a morning or afternoon at the centre is one of the most worthwhile experiences you can undergo while visiting this part of Southern Africa. You will surely learn something affirming about the existence of people dedicated to nature and preserving it for the benefit of the present and future generations. The beautiful natural surroundings enhance the entire experience.
The staff are young but knowledgeable and enthusiastic and interacting with them during the three hour programme there is a great pleasure. Try to arrive early and spend some time in the gardens around reception, there is wonderful birdlife and plants and inside the reception lapa are tea and coffee making facilities. Indeed if you have to leave your hotel early for the morning programme ask your hotel for a packed breakfast and you can enjoy it while you wait for the programme to start.
Please wear sun hat and sun screen and in the summer months light clothing as the climate to the north of the Magaliesberg is much warmer than Johannesburg. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
