Itinerary
Day 1: Hobart to Southwest National Park (L, D) After morning pickup from your Hobart hotel, head to Cambridge Airport for a spectacular 1-hour flight over Bruny Island and along Tasmania’s rugged south coast to the small hamlet of Melaleuca. A short walk takes you to the Deny King Memorial Hide, where you see the endangered orange-bellied parrot (October to March) and other birds. Then visit the home of the legendary local, Deny King. Have morning tea before an interpretive walk that tells the story of the Aboriginal Needwonee people.
At mid-day, board your boat that takes you to your exclusive remote camp, located on the shores of the Bathurst Harbour Marine reserve. Have lunch then go explore the waterways and wilderness of Bathurst Harbour. Visit the pristine Celery Top Islands, follow your guide on a rainforest stroll, and hike to the top of Mt Beattie for panoramic views. Return to camp in the late afternoon for a relaxing evening in this remarkable wilderness.
Overnight: Deluxe hut at private camp
Day 2: Southwest National Park (B, L, D) After breakfast, explore the Bathurst narrows by boat and admire the 2625 foot high (800m) mountains that jut out of the sea. Land at Balmoral Beach and take a morning stroll to Balmoral Hill. Then continue by boat to Parker Bay and hear the story of the explorer Critchley Parker Jr, who died in the wilderness while researching the region. In the afternoon, head to Bramble Cove for a gentle walk up Mt Milner, where you can see the white quartzite cliffs of Port Davey. Then cruise in your boat along the spectacular Breaksea Islands and Schooner Cove. Visit an ancient Aboriginal ochre cave before returning to camp for the evening.

Day 3: Southwest National Park to Hobart (B, L) Choose from several options for your day. Energetic hikers can climb Mt Rugby, a five hour round trip walk along a trail with a moderate grade. The 2539 foot (771m) mountain rises from the Bathurst Narrows and features amazing views of the entire South West. Or opt for a more leisurely walk to Cox Bight beach, along a mostly flat trail that takes five hours round trip. Alternatively, skip the long walks and visit an ancient Huon pine forest located on the Old River. Huon pine is native to Tasmania and is favored for timber.
In the late afternoon, board your return flight to Hobart, flying over the Federation Peak and the Western Arthur Range. Upon arrival in Hobart, you are returned to your hotel to end your tour.
