Day 01 - Hikkaduwa > Udawalawe
Start your journey at 0830 hrs from your hotel in Hikkaduwa. You will be met by a designated chauffer guide from Lakpura Travels. After the formalities at the hotel you will be escorted to your air conditioned vehicle and proceed to Udawalawe, then check in at the hotel. (Travel Time – 3 ½ to 4 hrs)
Later visit the Udawalawe National Park to catch sight of the famous Sri Lankan Elephant. See the herds relax and play in the cool waters of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Catch sight of many other endemic mammals, reptiles, birds and butterflies that also call the park home.
On completion return to the hotel and rest for the night.
Day 02 - Udawalawe > Matara > Hikkaduwa
Early in the morning proceed to the National Park for a morning safari.
Travel through the marshes, forests and grasslands of the park that was created as a sanctuary for wildlife in the 1970s. See the water birds and Sri Lankan elephants for which the park is famed. Catch glimpses of the other mammals and birds, as well as the reptiles, amphibians and butterflies.
After the safari return to the hotel, relax, check out and proceed to Matara and visit Weherahena Temple. (Travel Time – 2 to 2 ½ hrs)
Weherahena Poorwarama Raja Maha Viharaya is situated in the Matara District of Sri Lanka, about 6 kilometers off the Matara town. This rather unique temple is known as the first tunnel temple in the world. The temple hosts a massive 130-ft Buddha image that was built following the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras and also consists of all main features of a Buddhist temple- the pagoda, a sacred bo-tree and Samadhi Buddha statue. The walls of the temple are adorned with with Buddha murals. According to the historical records, the tunnel temple paintings narrate the Jātaka tales (legends) of Ummagga Jathaka and Umandawa.
On completion proceed to your hotel in Hikkaduwa. (Travel Time – 1 ½ to 2 hrs)
