Meet your private guide outside Villa Petraia, and then head inside its gardens to explore. Learn how the villa was originally owned by the family of architect Brunelleschi, before it was sold to a Florentine banker. In the mid-16th century it fell into the hands of the Medici family, who transformed it into a residence fit for royalty.
Hear how Cosimo I’s son, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, expanded the garden with terraces and planted trees, flower beds, and citrus and dwarf plants. The estate was then lavished further with sculptures and fountains. Step inside the villa to visit the ballroom, admire its 18th-century frescoes, and hear gossip about Rosina Vercellana and Vittorio Emanuele who made the villa their love nest.
Next, you’ll visit Villa di Castello, which lies on the route of a Roman aqueduct. Explore the garden, which Cosimo I created to symbolize his dynasty’s power. Admire the many fountains, monuments, and sculptures, and check out the Cave of Animals with its marble, mosaic and seashell embellishments. A highlight of the interior is the ornate living room, complete with 19th-century landscape frescoes.
