Overview

The Salkantay Trek is open to everybody meaning that there are no permit limitations. You will trek for 5 days accompanied by horses and mules to carry the gear and cooking equipment. The trek will take you along the highlands of the Andes into the cloud forest connecting the village of Mollepata with Machu Picchu. The starting point is located less than sixty miles northwest of Cusco in the Vilcabamba mountain range. Rising to 20,574 feet, Mount Salkantay is an outstanding glacier-capped summit worshipped for thousands of years by local Peruvians. Get off-the-beaten path on a trek perfect for travelers looking for a little more privacy and authenticity.
See itinerary below for details.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Salkantaypampa (L, D)
You will be picked up at your hotel in Cusco and taken to the bus station to head to Soraypampa, where the trek begins. Meet the horsemen and start trekking for 2 hours towards Salkantaypampa, which is the highest campsite (13,300 feet). Here, you can admire stunning views of the Vilcabamba mountain ranges and Mount Salkantay (20,815 feet). You will camp here for the night.

Day 2: Salkantaypampa – Challhuay (B, L, D)
Physically, this is the hardest day of the trek. You will hike for about 4 hours and the trail ascends steeply toward Salkantay pass (15,252 feet). After a 2-hour downhill trek, you will stop for a 1-hour lunch, then continue hiking for 3 more hours downhill to reach the campsite at Challhuay (9,512 feet). On this day you also have the option of renting a horse to help you climb to the pass.

Day 3: Challhuay – Santa Teresa (B, L, D)
You will trek to reach the town of Colcapampa, and then follow the trail that winds sharply down into the cloud forest. It follows the Lluskcamayo river and winds through the beautiful waterfalls with tropical flora and fauna. In the afternoon, you will enjoy relaxing thermal baths at the hot springs of Colpani. You will camp at Santa Teresa town (5,576 feet).

Day 4: Santa Teresa – Machu Picchu Town (B, L, D)
This is the last day on the trail. You will start by leaving from Santa Teresa through a relaxing path for 4 hours to reach the hydroelectric stations where you will have lunch. From here, you will continue the hike along the train tracks with the beautiful vegetation and colorful birds. After about 3 hours, you will reach Aguas Calientes town and spend the night at a hostel.

Day 5: Machu Picchu – Cusco (B, L)
You will take a 30-minute bus ride to the mountain citadel of Machu Picchu (8,040 feet). Once there, your guide will give you an early morning guided tour. Then, you have the chance to climb to the famous Wuayna Picchu peak or the Sacred Machu Picchu peak for a perfect view of the entire Inca city. You also have time to see Machu Picchu on your own before heading back to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch. Then, take the train back to Ollantaytambo and a bus back to Cusco.
