If you arrive early or stay longer, you’ll have plenty of free time to explore Thailand's northern capital – a captivating blend of ancient temples and modern markets.
Day 1: Chiang Mai After complimentary airport pickup, check in at your hotel and enjoy a free day at leisure — laze by the pool, relax with a Thai massage or head out to explore charming Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city. Venture around the northern capital on foot or on a bicycle and discover the fascinating temples, friendly people and vibrant markets, including street food at the Night Bazaar! Overnight: 2-star hotel in Chiang Mai
Day 2: Chiang Mai (B) After breakfast, your guide will take your small group on a tour of the temple complex of Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, one of Thailand's most beautiful temples. Enjoy the 45-minute drive along a scenic and winding mountain road to the temple. Then, ascend the 300 steps of its stairway guarded by nagas (mythological serpents) and be rewarded at the top with spectacular panoramic views of the city!
Return to your hotel in the late morning and gather with your small group again after lunch (own expense) for a safety briefing and bicycle fitting, including a helmet. Once you feel comfortable with the 24 gears and front suspension on your adapted mountain bike, follow your guide to the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Your 4.5-hour ride with frequent stops covers 15 to 18 miles (25 to 30 km) of flat ground, some of it unpaved.
Journey south through pleasant green fields, following the Ping River downstream. Cycle over small country roads, riding past fruit orchards, farms and the occasional colorful village as you encounter the rural Thai way of life. Visit a former leper colony, now a rehabilitation center, and learn about the activities of the missionaries in days gone by. Explore the spectacular temple ruins of Wiang Kum Kam, the former capital of Lanna, on the way back to Chiang Mai. Overnight: 2-star hotel in Chiang Mai
Day 3: Chiang Mai (B, L) Get ready for an action-packed day when your guide picks you up from your hotel after breakfast. Hop on a mountain bike and cycle on a dirt road, following the river for an approximate 6-mile (10-km) ride through uphill and downhill terrain. When you arrive at an upstream picnic spot, pause for a rest and enjoy a picnic lunch.
In the afternoon, get ready for a thrilling whitewater rafting trip down the Mae Taeng River and its 14 gorges. The staff will outfit you with helmet and lifejacket, and prepare your small group with a briefing on river safety. Once you’re acquainted with the paddling commands, the correct way to sit in the raft and any necessary precautions, jump on and enjoy the approximate 2-hour trip.
Praised as some of the best whitewater rafting in Asia, the difficulty level on the 6-mile (10-km) stretch of the Mae Taeng River ranges from grade 3 to 5. Complete your rafting adventure at a downstream camp, where you can rest and change into dry clothes. Enjoy some hot and cold drinks or fresh fruit before the return transfer to your hotel in Chiang Mai. Overnight: 2-star hotel in Chiang Mai
Day 4: Chiang Mai (B) With no activities planned for the day, you are free to depart at any time. Although checkout time is at noon, you can arrange luggage storage at the hotel if you plan to depart later. Enjoy a complimentary airport departure transfer or stay on in Chiang Mai, where you can join a cooking class, shop at bustling markets or meander through more than 300 temples in the cosmopolitan city.
