Overview
Your 6-night small-group tour introduces you to several of Spain’s top cities, where culture, good weather and history go hand-in-hand. Discover it all and enjoy overnight stays in Madrid and Granada as well as two nights in Seville, the sultry capital of Andalucia. Breakfasts are included daily (with the exception of Day 1) as well as three dinners throughout the tour. Ample free time is allocated for any meals that are not included, so you can check out the cities restaurants or tapas bars independently. Four-star hotel accommodation is included, and all hotels are centrally located so you can explore with ease in between tours.
Itinerary
Day 1: Barcelona – Madrid Make your own way to Barcelona Sants Station, and then board your train to Madrid. Relax in the comfort of standard class and, after a journey of roughly three hours, arrive into Madrid Atocha Station. Look out for your driver and make use of a transfer to your hotel. Check in, and enjoy a welcome drink and an orientation session during the evening.
Overnight: First Class : Courtyard Marriot Madrid Princesa
Day 2: Madrid After having breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a morning city tour; discover the Medieval origins of the city at Barrio de la Moreria and stroll by the most important landmarks and monuments of the city center such as the Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa. You will have the afternoon to spend at your leisure.
Overnight: First Class : Courtyard Marriot Madrid Princesa
Day 3: Madrid – Cordoba – Seville (B, D) After breakfast in your hotel, leave Madrid and travel south to sunny Cordoba. The countryside on your route is legendary, having been immortalized in Don Quixote’s novel Man of La Mancha. Lap it up, and then arrive in central Cordoba in time for your 2-hour sightseeing tour.
Explore the city on foot, discovering the pretty, flower-bedecked streets and cobbled paths that weave around the Mezquita, Cordoba’s famous cathedral-mosque. Head inside the iconic attraction and spend roughly an hour walking around its interior and learning about its history. Converted from a mosque to a church in the 13th century, the building boats a mishmash of architectural styles and influences from different religions.
Enjoy some free time for lunch (own expense), and then continue your journey south to Seville, capital of Andalucia. Check in to your hotel in time for dinner, and spend your night at leisure.
Overnight: 4-star Hotel Meliá Sevilla or similar in central Seville
Day 4: Seville (B, D) After breakfast, enjoy a 2-hour morning tour of Seville by both coach and foot. Sightsee around the ‘expo’ area (near Plaza de España), and then stop for a walk through leafy Murillo Gardens, the perfect place to escape from the heat. Pass Maria Luisa Gardens by coach, and then finish your sightseeing tour at a central location.
In the afternoon, enjoy some free time for lunch (own expense) and to sightsee at leisure. Perhaps scout out Seville Cathedral — a masterpiece of Gothic architecture — or pay a visit to Real Maestranza Bullring. Any entrance fees are at your own expense.
If you want to experience Seville’s famous culture after dinner, why not experience a traditional flamenco show in town at your own expense? Taking place at the legendary Tablao Palacio Andaluz, the 1.5-hour show features fiery dancing from some of the city’s top bailors (flamenco dancers) in time to fast-paced live music. Make your own way back to your hotel after the show finishes.
Overnight: 4-star Hotel Meliá Sevilla or similar in central Seville
Day 5: Seville – Granada (B) Leave Seville after breakfast, and travel north to Granada, home of the UNESCO-listed complex of Alhambra. On arrival, check in to your hotel, and then head out to explore the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens on a 2.5-hour tour.
Visit the Alhambra, a set of Moorish buildings with elaborate function rooms and opulent Islamic art, and walk along the terraces of the Generalife Gardens. Having explored the highlights of the Alhambra, return to your hotel by minibus, and then enjoy an afternoon of free time.
After dinner in your hotel, why not spend your evening learning about Granada’s gypsy heritage? Head out on an optional tour and explore the city’s Sacromonte Caves. Visit the cave homes where passionate singing and flamenco dancing take place each night; you can even join in yourself, if you wish!
Overnight: 4-star Carmen or similar in central Granada
Day 6: Granada – Toledo – Madrid (B) After breakfast, travel from Granada to the ancient city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The former capital of Spain, Toledo is now cited as the country’s spiritual capital and is home to countless religious monuments and historical landmarks. Learn about the city on a 1.5-hour tour by foot and coach, and see a collection of top Toledo attractions, too. Highlights include outside visits to the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue and San Juan de los Reyes Monastery.
When your sightseeing finishes, return to your coach and start your journey back to Madrid, where you will spend the night at your leisure.
