Heridanos, a river god, son of Oceanus and Tithys, was a small stream that flowed from a source at the foothills of Lycabettos through the ancient agora to the archaeological site of Kerameikos. Part of the river was unearthed during the excavation of the metro. Ilissos was a river god in antiquity and his great importance for ancient Athenians made Fidias depict him as an old and wise man in Parthenons gable. Here is where Plato describes Socrates discussing with his student Faidros about love and rhetoric. Now Ilissos lies beyond the city but, following our steps, you can imagine and also see his waters flowing again inspiring you to commune about anything that may concern you in our modern society. Through our tour you will meet ancient sanctuaries dedicated to mystery gods, christian churches that replaced the old temples, caves and roman baths.
