Day 1: Athens and Cape Sounion
From one awe inspiring site to the next is how your day starts, unfolds & just keeps going! After meeting at your hotel, start with the Acropolis learning of the turbulent history of the site, its construction, and aspects such as the mythological struggles of the gods over the name of the city. Passing picturesque Neoclassic houses, you arrive at the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s arch for an insight into the important Roman period of the city and continuing to the Plaka area, Roman Agora, Hadrians library, Keramikos & Ancient Agora, the market place of the ancient Athenians with the near complete Temple of Hephaestus.
Pausing for lunch with wonderful views to the ancient site, discuss how the ancient Greeks would have gathered to trade, exchange news, worship & carry out the street politics of the day before driving out of the city for around 50 minutes enjoying the Aegean coast line to explore the beautiful area of Sounion and the breathtaking Temple of Poseidon perched on the shear cliff edge. Learn of its importance in Greek history, its story & mythology and of previous visitors from Theseus to Lord Byron during his own Grand Tour before returning you to your hotel in the evening.
Day 2: Delphi
Dead north passing through some of the most beautiful countryside of Greece towards the slopes of Mt Parnassus to arrive at Delphi. Centre of the ancient world as designated by Zeus, home to the sacred Oracle and Pythian Games. This unique site dating back as far as 1500BC provides a tangible connection in history between the pre-classical and classical periods up to Roman times. Take all the time you need to enjoy the magnificent scenery & visit the impressive on-site museum with highlights such as the Naxian Sphinx and bronze sculpture of a charioteer. On your return, take time to stop at the pretty mountain village of Arachova perched at 3,116 feet (950 meters) to enjoy the village atmosphere, views and local craft shops before heading back to Athens.
