Explore where few expeditions have been before, in a 3-day conquest of Iceland's most challenging rafting river!
This adventure begins with a rugged drive from the base in Hafgrímsstaðir (approximately 1.5 hours from Akureyri) into the Sprengisandur desert, towards the source of the legendary East Glacial River (Jökulsá-Austari) at the foot of the mighty Hofsjökull glacier. Somewhere in the vast expanses of this arctic desert, a cluster of secluded cabins around a thermal oasis provides us shelter on our first night, and it is from here that you will plunge into your 2-day descent of Iceland's best river for rafting. Over these two days, you will navigate the full 60km of the East Glacial River through its twisting valleys and canyons, facing an ever-evolving blend of adrenaline-pumping whitewater, breathtaking scenery, and wilderness solitude. The trip wraps up on the third evening at the rafting base in Hafgrímsstaðir with a celebration of your achievements at a barbecue feast, and farewell fiesta with your guides and fellow rafters!
Included in this trip is all necessary rafting equipment (a drysuit, PFD, helmet, booties, gloves), drybags for your personal gear (approx. 50L), transportation into the highlands & from the river to the rafting base, 2 nights accommodation in backcountry lodges , all meals and snacks from lunch on Day 1 through to dinner on Day 3 , and memories to keep you smiling for a lifetime!
