Multi-Day Trip
Overview
Get to know the beauty and native wildlife of Kangaroo Island on this 2-day tour with a knowledgeable guide who takes you off the beaten track to discover the natural wonders of the island, including spectacular parks and wildlife preserves. Stay overnight at Vivonne Bay Lodge, a clean and comfortable budget accommodation that features spacious dorms, shared bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, complimentary tea and coffee, billiards, table tennis, bike rentals, and more. Find a hammock in a quiet nook if you want to relax; explore the hiking and biking trails on the large property; or swim at a gorgeous beach located just a few minutes walk from the lodge! The spirit of this tour is to work as a group in a fun and informal setting. For instance, everyone helps the guide with meal preparation and cleanup. If you're looking for privacy in between activities, upgrade to a private room at the lodge. See the Itinerary section for details on each day. Bed linens are provided at the lodge; please bring your own towel. Your tour includes two lunches, one breakfast and one dinner. You also have the option to upgrade to include a flight back to Adelaide.
Itinerary
Day 1: Adelaide – Kangaroo Island (L, D) After pickup at select Adelaide and Glenelg hotels, your small group travels by coach on a scenic 1.5-hour route through Fleurieu Peninsula to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. Once on the island, meet up with your friendly local guide to visit Rob's Shearing, a farm just outside Penneshaw. Watch in amazement as the expertly trained dogs round up the sheep, and then check out a sheep-shearing demo that only takes a couple of minutes! Learn about farming life, dog training, shearing technique and wool handling during the fascinating demonstration.
Next, head to gorgeous Pennington Bay on your way to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery. Eucalyptus oil was once a major industry on Kangaroo Island, but today Emu Ridge is the only commercial eucalyptus distillery in South Australia. Learn about the history of this family-owned operation and how they make their fine oils.
En route, you'll also make a stop at Seal Bay to take a closer look at a colony of Australian sea lions, and visit the towering sand dunes at Little Sahara to try out sandboarding. It’s like surfing on sand dunes!
After an active day, head to Vivonne Bay Lodge for the rest of the night. Before and after a barbecue dinner, which you help prepare, take some free time to explore the large property. A stunning beach, 6 miles (10 km) of walking and biking trails, and a table tennis area are among the places you can spend some free time. If you just want to wind down from the day, lounge in hammocks or find a quiet nook.
Overnight: dorm or private room, Vivonne Bay Lodge, Kangaroo Island
Day 2: Kangaroo Island – Adelaide (B, L) After breakfast, travel to Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to see wild koalas and kangaroos. Walk through eucalyptus groves where koalas sit in the branches while kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and other critters roam free on the large protected property. Continue to Flinders Chase National Park to see huge wind-sculpted boulders nicknamed the "Remarkable Rocks." Take in spectacular views of the coastline at Cape Du Couedic, and stop at Admirals Arch to watch long-nosed fur seals along the water. After a full morning, tuck into a tasty barbecue lunch at Flinders Chase Visitor Centre.
After your meal, visit a secluded beach at Stokes Bay, and if time permits, take a walk at Ironstone Hill to admire spectacular views of the mainland. Start your return journey to the ferry, stopping as time and weather allows to visit other scenic spots. Your group takes a break at a restaurant where you can purchase dinner before the return journey to Adelaide. Alternatively, opt for the optional upgrade to return by airplane from Kingscote Airport to Adelaide.
